Hello there! ^.^ Come on in and join us for Free for All Saturday. There are no themes to follow for prompts or fills. If, perhaps, you missed a prompt theme that you liked, or you've had any ideas that didn't really work with Tuesday's or Thursday's posts, then today's your chance to prompt 'em. Be free, and have fun! ✎

Just a few rules:
1. No more than five prompts in a row.
2. No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
3. Use the character's full name and the fandom's full name for ease in adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
4. No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
5. If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
6. If your story has possible triggers, please warn for them in the subject line!

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Are today's prompts not catching your eye? No worries, because we have plenty of older prompts that just might do the trick! You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. Sundays are for showing Lonely Prompts some love, whether by requesting for someone to adopt them or by sharing any fills that you've recently completed.

Wind can be Dangerous

cornerofmadness: (Do not want)
[personal profile] cornerofmadness
So the winds are over 60 mph and my parents' shingles are in the yard. Needless to say Dad is pissed. This is a 50 year roof (about 20 years in) but the tar proved to be dried out and this wind took the whole of the roof from what we can tell.

Naturally my 83 y.o. father decides he must go on the roof to try to stop this. He doesn't want help. I'm like fine. And when you blow off....

He didn't. Blow off the roof nor stop the zipper effect. You can still hear the nails pulling free even after 5 hours every time the wind picks back up. At first it was just 5 shingles. By dark it was 3 dozen. Better hope it doesn't begin to rain before an insurance adjuster gets out here. Two hours on hold with the insurance company waiting for someone pick up ended with the call disconnecting at their end.

Before that we had spent the afternoon with my favorite cousin my dad's age in her senior living center. That was very nice. We barely made it home before the wind.

I tried to figure out if my insurance pays for jardiance and dexcom but now it's decided my password isn't my password and any attempt to get it to email me a password reset has failed.

And I called my endocrinologist this morning to see if I could come 30 minutes late (because she's always an h our late anyhow) they were going to call me back. Never did. the problem? They put the appoint on the only day I can't be there without canceling work. And I could have sworn it was monday. It was SUPPOSED to be monday.

I was researching something for a Hazbin Hotel story (not the one below) and I needed to see who was the first woman newscaster in America. The answer was Dorothy Fuldheim in 1947 which is way before I imagined. (Mostly I was double checking to see if Vox could have had a female co anchor in the time period S2 depicted)

I thought she was interesting so have DOrothy's history for Women's History month. You can read about her
here.

So for the fannish 50 part of this, here's my story and my recs

Title: Not Licensed For This

Summary: Angel finds himself caught between a feuding Vox and Val and tries to help them be better partners. What else could he do? An annoyed Val was a dangerous Val and Angel wasn’t putting up with it today.

Rating: teen

Notes:Written for Sarajaye in the three sentence ficathon for the prompt Hazbin Hotel, Angel+Vox/Valentino, he unwittingly ends up playing couples therapist for them.

This was also written for the [community profile] allbingo prompt of tension and for [personal profile] spikesgirl58’s 6 word prompt challenge. The six words were Spirit, Jump, Bracket, Detector, Baby, & Pudding

For some reason I set this pre-season. Just seemed like an interesting time to explore a little.

A teensy bit late, but no worse for it, it's time for Thursday Recs!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

Maybe it's a good thing I don't have one near me (it's 90 miles away with my Trader Joe's). I would have even more of a food hoarding issue and much less money. That said, I made a nice haul and my poor car is going to be much more loaded going home than it came here.

Somehow this did manage to eat up huge chunks of my day.

I'm still batting around ideas for what to do this year. Then I feel selfish for thinking about vacation when the world is on fire. On the other hand it'll still be on fire if I sit at home in my apartment. Sigh.

I have some community recs [community profile] worldbuildex looks interesting. Sign ups are right now

and then there is [community profile] vampiremedia all about vampires.

And for Women's History month how about the wiki for Rita Levi-Montalcini She is a noble prize winner and one of the few women in my biomedical books. Now. I never heard of her until I began teaching and she wasn't even in my earliest books teaching. So I've only seen her in the last 15 years. How sad is that?

I think I waited too long to investigate the Solar Battery situation. The guy has not replied to my emails or my texts.

Actually, most people are rather bad at responding to my emails and texts. GRARGH.

Anyway, looking at other solar battery quotes, his looks very cheap, which...I'm mostly okay with tbh.
I'm thinking of this as a stop-gap measure, really until I can set up a longer-lasting nickel-iron battery - the kind that old Nikola Tesla came up with, and which work for 100 years. Yes, it takes a little maintenance, but I'm more worried about losing access to electrical technicians than I am about having to replace the electrolyte solution once a month.

Yes, that says where my priorities and fears are right now. Frankly, I'm more worried about robustness of our supply-demand chain (newsflash: it's about as robust as your grandmother's crystal in a quarry) than I am about having to do things manually.

My garden is open on the 21st-22nd March, for guests, and it's seriously 'underdone' right now. Everything is wild (it's that time of year when the weather is hot and the rain is happening, and EVERYTHING GROWS). I had some friends by last weekend to put together some garden beds, and they're done and set, and now I just have to fill them.

And that's where this weekend and the teenager I'm hiring to do the work comes in.

A pile of woodchips is being delivered this afternoon.

We dig out the back paths (carefully! there are pipes in there!), discard the runner grass, and put it in the garden beds (bottom).

We dig out the chicken yards and all the lovely soil that's down there, and put it in the new garden beds (top).

We fill the back paths with the woodchips, then the chicken yards, then the chicken tunnels, then the banana circle, then the composts...

And all this after going for a 5km run on Saturday (maybe I shouldn't have committed to the run).

Then, Sunday morning is a Crop Swap!

OOF.

Yesterday, I made the sudden realisation that I've been writing Maria Hill (all my agents, in fact) like they were Australian SAS, not US Special Forces. An operative goes out and is given the trust to deal with the situation as needed rather than having to go up the chain of command as US Forces (even special forces) have to do.

The difference is rather telling.

I wonder how recent this doctrine is - the military doctrine of minimising possible fuck-ups by ensuring that decisions have to be approved up the command chain. I wonder if (pragmatically) there was a significant cultural difference between the WWII Howling Commandoes and the way the US military worked (at least pre-2025) such that Steve would have found it distinctly difficult to work with the modern US military units, who are trained not to go off-road and make their own decisions: the YT video says that even units like Navy Seals and Delta Force are reliant on communications and up-chain decisions to go/no-go.

Anyway, it's a thought.

Not to mention, I can use this in my novel: if the MC is more inclined for an Aussie SAS mentality (although she is American) and doesn't quite fit into the paramilitary organisation she's working with (which runs off a US military authority mentality) then I can make that work.

--

Finally, Jima-wu, our remaining chicky-babe, is still with us. Survived and thriving. Back to what she was before the sickness, still on medication, and will be for a few more days.

*sigh* I'm still sad about Nien-go, and a little tired. It's a lot going on right now.

Now for why you're probably here. Hello, everyone. I’m [personal profile] simplyn2deep, and today is my last day of hosting for the week.

Today’s theme is Markings. These can be physical, symbolic, temporary, or permanent, anything that leaves a visible trace. Think tattoos, scars, birthmarks, paint, ink, magical marks, bruises, or even something drawn in the sand.

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.

+ Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett + Danny Williams, Danny asks about the scars Steve never talks about.
+ Teen Wolf, Erica Reyes/Boyd (Vernon Boyd III), Erica paints a symbol on Boyd before a dangerous mission.

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community. Fret not, DW members; we are working on a way to search through old entries for prompts for you! As of right now, the best way to search for a lonely prompt on DW is to search the community’s archive, which can be found [[HERE]].

While the use of LJ's advanced search and DW’s archive are options, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

As a friendly reminder about our schedule, Lonely Prompts and sharing completed fills are encouraged on Sundays, while new themes and prompts are posted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a free-for-all day. We'll share our posts on DW and LJ for everyone's convenience. Keep an eye out for notifications!

Once or twice a week I take a Randomness Break and click on Kagi Small Web for a while. Like I need more rabbit holes to fall into.

Anyway, today Small Web led me to Pawel Grzybek’s blog post: My Defaults 2026 – which was really interesting (to me).

I know that my own defaults are currently messed up, and the plan is to rethink things – but it’s a low-priority task. However, I can at least start with a list for assessment purposes.

Nothing but storms, high winds and tornado warnings (nothing spinny here in PA but who knows about back home).

So I did nothing but taxes (smaller refund and less pay in general, shocker) and grading ALL the things. I worked from 11-7. My brain is tired now.

So you'll get my books and one thing I've been forgetting for forever.

What I Just Finished Reading:

At Death's Dough - a so-so mystery. It took forever to get started and the ending was dumb

The Final Problem - mystery set in the 60s talk about dumb endings

I Want to be a Wall - a lavender marriage with an aro-ace BL loving girl and a gay man in love with his childhood friend. It was decent but not even for me to read more.

What I am Currently Reading:

The Snow Child - so far depressing. It's for my ugly prompt of dealing with infertility. It's a retelling of the

Violet Thistlewaite is not a villain any more so far, I really like this one

What I Plan to Read Next: With Friends Like These, La Grand Familia, and Luna Park history

I keep forgetting to post about [personal profile] kingstoken's reading challenge which you can see here. It's a prompt bingo. I'm going for a black out.

This is what I have so far (too tired to link them up, sorry, also I need to get up soon. Been sitting too long)

I'm just sharing the ones I've done

Main character over 30 The Final Problem by Arturo Pérez-Reverte

Graphic novel/comic book Heavy Vinyl Complete Collection by Carly Usdin

Set at a school/university - Murder Made Her Wicked by Elizabeth Hobbs

No sex/romance - Murder in the Ranks by Kristi Jones

Figures without facial features on the cover - Murder Made Her Wicked by Elizabeth Hobbs

Crime/mystery - Sugar and Vice by Eve Calder

Book Older than you are - Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Female author - Tell-Tale Treats: A Magical Fortune Cookie Novel by Jennifer J. Chow

A favorite author blurbed it - This Is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar

Banned book - Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Octavia Butler & Damian Duffy

Phase III of the home remodel has been on hold during January and February – partly because I was underwater – but also we had some track head lighting on backorder.

Yesterday morning the electricians were here. They 1) installed the new, dimmable track lighting in the family room, 2) replaced a partially broken overhead light in Katie’s room with a new fixture and dimmer switch, 3) repaired a GFI outlet in the kitchen which had been permanently interrupted, and 4) added one more track head lamp in the NE corner of my home office. The work took four hours – from 7:00 am to 11:00 am.

New Light Fixture in Katie’s Room
New Light Fixture in Katie’s Room
iPhone 13 mini photo

The new track lighting necessitated running power under the floor to a new light switch. Holes had to be cut into drywall so that wiring could be run. The drywall will get repaired in the near future.

The new lighting – everywhere – looks great. Previously, there was no overhead lighting in the family room, so the new media library and storage cabinets were dim. Now it’s much easier to see and find things.

One remaining task is installing a new carpet runner in the entryway. The carpet is here but not installed as my interior designer was sick and didn’t want to enter the house. Once the drywall is patched and the carpet runner installed, Phase III of construction will be complete. (I still have months of item sorting / reorganization / giveaway to conduct. The remodel project will be complete when I can get Shizu back into the garage.)

I sent in my two panel ideas to the Gettysburg Steampunk Festival. I wasn't going to go but when it didn't pan out with the Louisville panels. Trying for a little fun in a world on fire.

Today mom and I went out to meet my younger cousin for her birthday and went off to Trader Joe's. I wish I had one closer to me. Mine is 90 miles off in Columbus. Even here the closet one is about 35 minutes away. Picked up some cool things.

The writing zoom went well tonight too.

So for fannish 50 I have something from [personal profile] kitarella_imagines

i. Look at your last 10** fics.

ii. Make a list of their first lines of dialogue, with any necessary description. No cheating, I mean don't go through your fics looking for the best line of dialogue.

iii. Post them and we'll see if we can guess what the story will be about from the dialogue.

Kitarella also mentioned it's okay to go back further than the last 10 if the opening dialogue isn't that interesting.

Feel free to play along

I got a little USB Cassette converter to digitize some of my old tapes! As such I went and digitized the two tapes I could find, Randomousity 5 and 8. I had a whole series but these are the only ones on hand! I'm not sure many I made of them. :O The rips are pretty good quality, it's mostly the tapes themselves that have gotten damaged over the years. Sometimes the audio gets kind of rough or fades in and out, but mostly it's pretty clear! It always gets rough when each side stops and starts. But maybe some of you are into that kind of thing. |D

As such, they're on the site now! I added a third shelf for them on the index since they needed the space. :B They lead to the same page though. Notably for the spine/cases, I took some photos of my actual tapes! Well, one tape and one case, the others were all in pretty bad shape or had a bunch of drawings or track listings on them.

Case in point )

They look a bit more realistic as a result than the others but still. |D I think they're neat. I figured a horizontal pile would be a fun contrast to the vertical CDs. You can download the tapes on the site itself! Should I link to them in this entry too...? Well, I can do the tracklisting anyway, haha. A lot of these songs show up in later CDs, I've had them for a long time.

Randomousity 5 went...

SIDE A
The Cynic Project - Matrix ]|[
Bamble B - Crime of Passion (Main Mix)
Bjork - I've Seen It All
Rhexx - Yellowstone
Massive Attack - Everywhen
Ben Folds - The Ascent of Stan
Blind Melon - No Rain
System of a Down - The Metro
Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug
Kittie - Brackish
Cirque du Soleil - Jeux d'enfants
--
SIDE B
Cirque du Soleil - Jeux d'enfants
Zilch - Into Heaven
Hiro feat. Sweet Little 30's - Heaven is a '57 Metallic Gray (GimMIX)
Final Offset - Twin Bee -Generation X-
Mr. T - xenon
tiger YAMATO - r3
Becky and Pokemon Kids - Soratobu Pokemon Kids
Ben Folds - Carrying Cathy
Ben Folds - Zak and Sara
VA - Always (DJ Tatana remix)
The Swan Princess - This Is My Idea
Matt Wilson - Real Folked Up (Cowboy Bebop Remix)
Within Temptation - Mother Earth
Heino - Die Schwarze Barbara

This tape was odd since it started on a down note and then went up, which was the opposite of how I usually did it.

Randomousity 8 went...

SIDE A
Dr. Reanimator - Move Your Dead Bones
Haiducii vs O-Zone & Gabry Ponte - Dragostea Din Tei RMX
Gigi D'Agostino - The Riddle
Ministry of Sound - Deepest Blue - Deepest Blue
J.B.O. - Hey, Pippi Langstrumpf
Dance Nation - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Sonny and Cher - Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves
The Pirates of Penzance - I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General
Tom Lehrer - The Elements Song
Randy Newman - I Love L.A.
The Magnetic Fields - All My Little Words
The Magnetic Fields - I Wish I Had an Evil TWin
The 6ths - Dead Only Quickly
The 6ths - San Diego Zoo
--
SIDE B
The 6ths - San Diego Zoo
The 6ths - Give Me Back My Dreams
Ryan Cabrera - On The Way Down
The Exies - Ugly
Yoko Kanno - Butterfly
Conjure One - Center of the Sun
Vast - My TV and You
explode 16 - thunderstorm
Lord of the Rings - Into the West
Spacekats - Land of the Rising Sun
Spacekats - Mellow
Crispy - Bubble Dancer
Crispy - The Game
Crush - Jellyhead

The label on the tape was so damaged I could barely read it! The tape itself played fine, mostly, although it definitely has some rough bits. I remember listening to this a lot while writing Vargas back in the day, and of course I was visualizing Move Your Dead Bones to it, hehe. This might have been one of the last ones I ever made, it's hard to remember now. I found tapes for the DDR 5th and 6th megamixes, but you could probably find those anywhere in much better quality so I didn't transfer them.
(zaaaarrr you can find all these tracks anywhere in much better quality, why did you do thiiissSs)

It was satisfying to handle the tape transferrer, it feels just like an old Walkman. Very nostalgic to flip it open, slide a tape in, click the thick buttons, hear it whirring in there. I used my Walkman so much back in the day! It was more durable than a Discman and tapes didn't skip if you banged them around, haha. I used it way after everyone had switched over to Discmans, which was foreshadowing for how I keep using things way after everyone else has left.

Saturdays are a Free for All day. We'll share our posts on DW and LJ for everyone's convenience. Keep an eye out for notifications!

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so…and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

Just did laundry and finished my short story, steampunk 'day at the races' as a try for something in Louisville. Is it my best work? no. Will I have tons of competition? Some but who knows. Could use eyes on it.

I'm mostly here to do Music Monday and Women's history. Yes I missed saying something International Women's Day (I was beat) so today have the woman who started off my sabbatical research, someone I met in college and carried her story with me all these years Elizabeth Blackwell

As for music Monday, on the drive here the last radio station I go to (the one I listen to in this area) was having an International Women's Day fest by playing women artists (and mentioning iheartradio's women's history station) and in the next 1 1/2 hours they played 3 songs by women. 3...

So we can do better. THis monday I 'm taking a break from the list and let's just share songs written by, performed by women (however you care to define it)
