solon_kitten: A white kitten with azure markings ready to pounce (solon_pounce)

I've mentioned elsewhere (and on here in a now-private post) that I own an Apple A1015 Wireless Mouse, though I also own a dark Apple Pro Mouse as well. I love these things, as they're not only nice to hold, but also comfortable to use for long periods of time when I'm editing (or rarely, when gaming). However, these aren't exactly normal mice. They're one-button mice, more akin to classic Macs from the System 1 era up to Mac OS 9. No middle button, no right button, and no scroll wheel.

Having only one button to use doesn't pose a problem at all. At least in Mac OS, you can Control + Click to right-click, and in many cases, Command + Click emulates what would be done with a middle-click (e.g. opening a link in a new tab in Firefox). Windows and Linux are a different beast, as they're made for multi-button mice, and I do have to switch to my onn Wireless Mouse when using them. However, that's fine as well, as I don't do so often. Also for a few games, but again, rarely.

(The Logitech wireless mouse I mentioned buying has already to degrade and malfunction to the point of being useless.)

Honestly, only having the one button means I'm not splitting my fingers when using it. My hand is in a more natural and neutral position, and that removes a lot of the strain I often get along the muscles in my lower arm. Especially with the muscles for my thumb and index finger, where I've had RSI from using more typical multi-button mice for so long. I also don't have to wrap my hand around it quite as tightly as I would an "ergonomic" multi-button mouse.

Do I miss having a scroll wheel? No, not really. I have scroll bars and buttons in most cases, unless someone decides to do horrible things and completely hide them on a website. Sorry, I'm actually bitter about that part, as it's a nightmare when I encounter that on any system or device. Not knowing where scrolling is possible gets to me when there's information I know should be there, but isn't visible.

Different isn't always a bad thing when it's designed properly, and the one-button mouse can actually be quite nice. 15-18 buttons on a gaming mouse would be way too much for me, but given how well some people wield them for tasks where lots of action commands are needed (e.g. Ryan Hall's severe weather streams), they definitely have their uses. It's the same way I can't really enjoy a clicky mechanical keyboard with tall keys anymore, but love something with rubber domes and  short chiclet keys (like my Anker A7726, or my Apple Wireless Keyboard).

To each their own~
