I love that I can do pretty much everything I want with an older laptop and Mac 10.6.8 right now.
  • Writing blog posts? Dreamwidth still works with older Chrome, SeaMonkey, ArcticFox, and many other browsers.
  • Listening to music? iTunes works fine, and there are *tons* of IceCast servers for when I want to listen to music not on my system.
  • YouTube? I subscribe to the RSS feeds of channels I wanna follow in Vienna, and use Invidious or yt-dlp to watch the videos.
  • Streams? streamlink works just fine with everything.
  • Gaming? DOSBox (via Boxer), or Wine (via WineBottler), or VMs (via Parallels Desktop 7) handle that need.
  • Backups? I've got an AirPort Time Capsule for local backups, and I'm running a fake iDisk (WebDAV) and git on a remote server for distant backups.
  • Social media? brutaldon works perfectly fine for the Fediverse, and Unison or slrn works for Usenet (along with Thunderbird and SeaMonkey).
  • Email? The default Mail.app still works, and there's always Thunderbird or SeaMonkey Mail.
  • Online chat? I like XMPP and IRC, which are handled by Adium and Limechat respectively. bitlbee-discord is an option for discord text chat as well, though not sure for how much longer.
  • Writing? I have iWork '09, Scrivener, and BBEdit.
It's amazing just how much you can do with retro/vintage systems now, so long as you know the limits. I don't use Google Suite, Google Drive, OneDrive, or a lot of other online-only webapps, so your usecase might be different. But for me, I'm happy with what I've got.
